A 40-year-old Chinese Singaporean female is found to have parasites growing in her womb. This is believed to be the first such case in Singapore. With robotic surgery Mr Ng Hwee Khiang has only small scars and was back at work less than three weeks after he had surgery for colorectal cancer in April. Number of IVF local cycles have doubled in the last five years (News, Lianhe Zaobao)


The number of IVF cycle done in Singapore doubled in the past five years. However, this is less than half of the number of cycles done in countries such as Denmark. Public Awareness, cost and attitude may be causes of such disparity. For instance, delivering one's baby in the water creates a more conducive setting for intimate bonding between the mother and her newborn. Endometrial cancer has risen to becoming fourth most common cancer among Singapore women (Singapore News, Lianhe Zaobao)

 

Endometrial cancer has gone from being the eighth most common cancer to the fourth most common cancer in Singapore women in the last 10 years, increasing by almost 60% from 904 cases to 1,434 cases from 1998-2008. Majority of the cases diagnosed at NUH are women above the age of 40 where about 80 per cent are diagnosed as having Stage 1 of the cancer. There are currently three treatment options available, which includes robot-assisted surgery that NUH started using since 2008. Read more
